Watersmeet, MI: Proud Nimrods

Nimrod. A name that once meant, “mighty hunter.” Looney Toons had something different to say about that. They called Elmer Fudd a “nimrod”. While they still may have referred to the hunter part, Elmer Fudd was anything but mighty. He was a dimwitted idiot and being called a Nimrod in today’s world isn’t something to be proud of. With that being said, there people in a small unassuming town in Michigan that are proud to be Nimrods. Watersmeet is tucked near the Wisconsin-Michigan border and you can pass it with the blink of an eye.

I had first discovered Nimrod Nation while going up to Copper Harbor a couple years ago.

Now Watersmeet has been a town since the late 1800’s. This is well before Looney Toons. If you’ve ever been up to the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan, you know it’s a great place to hunt. I can see why they are still proud to be Nimrods no matter what society says.

It would be interesting to go to one of their sports games and see what kind of chants the opposing fans have. In many ways, I could see it be entertaining, but in other ways it would be cool to see the Nimrods hold their heads up high. I get a laugh every time I pass through Watersmeet but I’m happy to say I pass through a proud Nimrod Nation.
